The 2023 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Team and poll were announced Monday by the league office and Arkansas State sophomore kicker Dominic Zvada is a first team selection.
A Lou Groza Award semifinalist and freshman All-American, Zvada broke the Sun Belt Conference single-season record by a true freshman for points by kicking in a season with 81. He finished his first year with the Red Wolves going 30-for-31 on PATs with the lone miss being blocked. Zvada was 17-for-18 on field goals, including 4-for-5 on field goals over 45 yards. He made a 56-yard field goal at Texas State, the second-longest in FBS last season and second-longest field goal in program history. He is the only kicker since at least 2000 to go 4-for-4 on field goals in a game at Ohio State.
Zvada has racked up numerous preseason honors in addition to Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team. He was named a Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team by Phil Steele, Athlon, Pro Football Focus and SIS (Sports Info Solutions). He was also named to the HERO Sports Group of Five Preseason All-America First Team.
A-State was picked to finish fifth in the West Division of the league’s Preseason Coaches Poll. Troy topped the West Division coaches poll with 92 points and 10 first-place votes. South Alabama was second with 85 points and received four first-place votes, followed by Louisiana (64), Southern Miss (62), Texas State (36), Arkansas State (33) and ULM (20).
James Madison topped the East Division poll with 78 points and four first-place votes. Appalachian State (4), Coastal Carolina (3), Marshall (2) and Georgia Southern (1) also received first-place nods. Appalachian State (75) was second in the East Division poll followed by Coastal Carolina (71), Marshall (68), Georgia Southern (52), Georgia State (31) and Old Dominion (17).
Sun Belt Conference media days begin Tuesday with the West Division and concluded Wednesday with the East Division teams. Coverage is available on ESPN+. Head Coach Butch Jones, along with linebacker Melique Straker and safety Justin Parks, take the main state at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
